Jennifer Marchant’s map installation of Brisbane’s CBD and surrounds veils three elevations of a car park, creating a pedestrian viewpoint of the city. Landscape contours are based on past and present uses of the site. They wrap counter clockwise around the structure, progressively diminishing until only a thread-like expression on the northern elevation remains.
Marchant’s screens are both sculptural and functional. They help ventilate the sub-tropical car park, offering substantial cost savings to the developer by replacing costly mechanical systems. In doing so Landlines exemplifies the value and opportunity of integrated artworks.
